LIVE BLOG: Follow Along In Real Time During Indiana’s Season Opener Against Eastern Michigan – CalBearsMaven

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Welcome to Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, where the Mike Woodson era begins on Tuesday night when his first Indiana basketball team takes on Eastern Michigan.

There are fans in the stands again, which is a wonderful change from a year ago.

If you’re not familiar with how our live blog works, we’ll post news and opinion live and in real time from right here on press row at Assembly Hall. We’ll toss in highlights as well as they come available.

Enjoy the game!

8:07 p.m. — After a timeout, Eastern Michigan presses, but point guard Xavier Johnson blows right through it and drives all the way to the rim for a layup. Stunning that EMU didn’t foul. INDIANA 66, EASTERN MICHIGAN 62.

8:06 p.m. — Noah Farrakhan hits another three-pointer with 23.6 seconds left, and suddenly the lead is down to two points. Hasn’t been that close since Indiana’s first basket of the game. INDIANA 64, EASTERN MICHIGAN 62.

8:04 p.m. — Noah Farrakhan misses a well-contested jumper and Xavier Johnson is fouled quickly on the other end. He makes the first, but misses the second, but Race Thompson gets the offensive rebound. Indiana runs clock, and Thompson misses a three-pointer.

8:02 p.m. — Indiana goes back inside to Trayce Jackson-Davis, and he’s fouled. Only makes 1-of-2 and that’s now just 1-of-5 on the night. With 1:19 to go, it’s INDIANA 62, EASTERN MICHIGAN 58.

8 p.m. — Brutal call on that 3-point attempt by Noah Farrakhan, Looked clean to me from here. He gets three free throws at the 1:39 mark, but only makes one.

7:56 — Great interior pass from Trayce Jackson-Davis to Race Thompson to make it 61-58, and then the Hoosiers get a break on the other end with an illegal screen call. The Hoosiers then go back inside to Race Thompson and he’s fouled with 1:52 to go. Misses the first, makes the second. INDIANA 62, EASTERN MICHIGAN 58.

7:55 p.m. — Xavier Johnson makes 1-of-2 free throws but then EMU’s Noah Farrakhan hits a three to make it a 59-56 game, and then scores on a drive to make it 59-58. Jeez.

7:52 p.m. — Indiana has gone stone cold offensively, and now Eastern Michigan is within five points, and 58-53 with 3:57 to go. Far too close for a team that was up 20 at one point.

7:50 p.m. — The best timeout in basketball!!

7:50 p.m. — The best timeout in basketball!!

7:40 p.m. — And now it’s down to eight, on an Eastern Michigan three-pointer. But Jordan Geronimo dunks on the other end for Indiana, off a nice pass by Rob Phinisee. INDIANA 52, EASTERN MICHIGAN 42.

7:35 p.m. — Eastern Michigan is turning this into a game. Nate Scott drives the lane and dunks and the lead is down to 48-37. Trayce Jackson-Davis answers on the other end, working around a triple-team for a basket off the glass.

7:30 p.m. — We’re at the under-12 timeout and Indiana’s lead is down to 15 points at 48-33. The Hoosiers are 0-for-4 from three this half. Definitely want to see that be better. But one key coming into the season was protecting the basketball better, and the Hoosiers only have six turnovers so far. INDIANA 48, EASTERN MICHIGAN 33.

7:25 p.m. — Indiana’s shooting numbers aren’t great, which isn’t totally surprising on the first night out. With 12:44 to go, they’re shooting 44.4 percent from the field (20-for-45), and just 21.1 percent from three (4-for-19).

7:22 p.m. — A perfect example of why Trayce Jackson-Davis is going to be a beast this year, even compared to a year ago. He’s in much better shape. He blocked a shot on one end, then sprinted down the floor and got an alley-oop from Xavier Johnson on the end for a huge dunk. That sprint down the court was impressive. Ran past a couple of defenders. Indiana up 48-30.

7:20 p.m. — Indiana made 4-of-5 free throws in the first half, but Trayce Jackson-Davis misses his first two of the game.

7:15 p.m. — We’re at the first media timeout in the second half, and the lead has grown to 20 points for Indiana. It’s 46-26. Trayce Jackson-Davis has been very active, with eight quick points in the half, including two resounding dunks that got the fans out of their seats. He’s got 14 points now, the first Hoosier in double figures.

HALFTIME: The first half is in the books, and Mike Woodson has to be mostly happy. Indiana’s defense has been terrific, allowing just 19 points. The Hoosiers go to the half with a 36-19 lead. INDIANA 36, EASTERN MICHIGAN 19.

6:43 p.m. — Another basket for Rob Phinisee on a mid-range jumper, and Indiana goes up by 17 points (32-15), its biggest lead of the game. Phinisee is currently Indiana’s leading scorer with seven points, and he’s really playing well.

6:38 p.m. — We’re at the under-4 timeout, and Indiana still leads big, up 30-15. Eastern Michigan is just 5-for-26 shooting, for 19.2 percent. Give a lot of credit to the Hoosiers’ defense for that. There’s been plenty of ball pressure up front, they’re closing out on shooters well and the inside guys, Trayce Jackson-Davis and Race Thompson are blocking shots.

MY TWO CENTS: A little ”get off my lawn” moment from an old guy. All Indiana players are wearing white Adidas shoes tonight, and I think that’s wonderful. I hate this recent trend of guys all wearing different shoes. It’s a nice clean look for the Hoosiers, in all white tonight.

6:32 p.m. — Xavier Johnson comes back in, but Rob Phinisee stays on the floor. Phinisee attacks the basket from the left wing, and then hits Johnson with a perfect pass and he knocks down a three, his first Indiana basket. INDIANA 28, EASTERN MICHIGAN 13.

6:30 p.m. — And you asked for Trayce Jackson-Davis to score with his right hand, and you get that too. A glass bucket off the glass and Indiana goes up 23-13.

6:20 p.m. — Mike Woodson said Monday that the defense was ahead of the offense so far, and that’s proven to be true. Indiana’s aggressive man-to -man defense has been very good. Eastern Michigan only has 10 points with 7:21 to go in the first half.

6:13 p.m. — Mike Woodson goes to his bench for the first time at the 14-minute mark, subbing Rob Phinisee for Xavier Johnson at point guard. Johnson seems a little amped up in his first game at Assembly Hall. He has three early turnovers. A minute later, freshman Tamar Bates and sophomore Jordan Geronimo come in, too.

6:12 p.m. — You wanted perimeter jump shots from Trayce Jackson-Davis this year, and you get the first one from about 18-feet to give the Hoosiers a 10-0 lead. He looked nice and comfortable, too.

6:05 p.m. — The first basket of the year comes from guard Parker Stewart, who knocks down a three-pointer. And then he hits another one, and the Hoosiers are off and rolling.

5:45 p.m. — Indiana’s starting lineup is as expected with Trayce Jackson-Davis, Race Thompson and transfers Miller Kopp, Xavier Johnson and Parker Stewart on the perimeter.
